CASE 01 Automated Shim Selection Machine
Valve-clearance shim selection, re-engineered from a two-pass torque-and-recheck cycle into a single-pass machine decision.
- The PROBLEM
- Tedious process
- First, assemble a known value shim
- Torque the cam cover 8 bolts
- Check each valve position with the filler gauge for GAP
- Then note down the difference with respect to the preassembled shim and the required GAP
- Unscrew the cam cover 8 bolts
- Assemble the final shim
- Torque the cam cover 8 bolts
- The Solution we offered
- Assemble the part with master shims without Cam cover bolts
- Load the part on the shim selection machine
- Machine cycles and calculates the required shim
- Remove the master shim and load the displayed shim
- Torque the cam cover
2× → 1×
Torque cycles eliminated per unit — no more assemble‑measure‑disassemble‑reassemble loop.
